How To Play Acoustic Guitar

By: Layne Smith

How you start is important. Guitar playing can be for everyone. Be it acoustic or electric. Pick your poison. But not everyone plays guitar. Why? It takes some work. It takes time and dedication. It sounds beautiful, when done right. Heed this advice, in order to learn how to play acoustic guitar well, you must practice, practice, practice! Just like any realtor will tell you, the 3 most important things in real estate is location, location, location! To learn how to play acoustic guitar well, you must go out and get the basics. A teacher, written material, the time to practice, and of course, the guitar.

When learning anything new, it's great having a teacher to show you the ropes. Though, not entirely necessary, a guitar instructor is great to have. Having someone show you the basics will get you ahead of the game. A guitar teacher will show you what you need to learn to progress. Often left on your own, it's easy to get lost and not know what to do next. A lot of time is saved having a teacher. Make sure you do your research. A great teacher is a good to have on your side when you have questions.

Written material includes anything and everything from guitar chords, charts, and diagrams. When you are learning to play guitar, a reference guide is so important to have. There are many chords on the guitar. Learning scales is a must as well. You can buy songbooks and learn your favorite songs. There are many guitar tab websites out there with thousands of songs you can learn from as well.

In order to do anything well, you must put in the time. Playing guitar can be painful at times I have to admit. Your fingertips will hurt in the beginning. You'll know what I mean when you start. Over time, calluses will develop. Practicing chords will be uncomfortable at first. The way you position your whole body is important when playing acoustic guitar. The more time and energy you put into learning and playing guitar, the more you will get out of it.

Before you go out and do anything, probably the most important thing to do when starting out is, to have a decent acoustic guitar to learn on. Go to different music shops and try out everything. Get a feel for each brand and model. Figure out why the next guitar is a couple hundred or even a thousand dollars more. Try out everything. It's a good idea to bring a friend with you that knows a lot about guitars already.

Playing guitar is definitely a journey. How you begin the journey is important. Getting the right teacher for guidance and having the resources right from the beginning is the first step to playing. The amount of time, blood, sweat, and tears, you put into practicing your art will show. I hope you start out on the right foot because playing acoustic guitar can be very gratifying.
